PURPOSE:To reduce the variation in load for a heating furnace so as to reduce the fuel consumption per unit product, by changing discharging pitch for slab in a range satisfying productivity in accordance with the circumstances of the heating furnace. CONSTITUTION:In a continuous multiple zone heating furnace, a thick slab or a slab which is to be discharged at high temp. is made to stay in the furnace as long a time as possible, and a thin slab or a slab which is to be discharged at low temp. is made to stay in the furnace as short a time as possible under the conditions satisfying predetermined optional production and the limitation of the mill. To satisfy the staying time in the furnace, the discharging pitch of a slab discharged prior to the object slab is set by adjustment prior to the charging. Hereby, the variation in the load for the heating furnace is reduced to a very small one, hence the heat loss of waste gas is reduced. Consequently the fuel consumption per unit product is reduced remarkably.
