PREPARATION OF REACTIVE SELF-CROSSLINKING HYDROGEL

PURPOSE:To prepare the titled hydrogel having high water-absorbing capacity and useful as a water-absorbing material, by suspending an aqueous solution of monomers containing a specific amount of an OH-containing (meth)acrylate in a hydrocarbon in the presence of a specific surface active agent, and carrying out the polymerization. CONSTITUTION:A=20wt% aqueous solution of (A) an alkali metal acrylate and (B) acrylic acid is suspended in an aromatic hydrocarbon or an aliphatic hydrocarbon in the presence of (C) 1.0-90wt%, based on (A)+(B), of an OH-containing alkyl (meth)acrylate (e.g. 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) using a W/O type surface active agent having an HLB value of 3-6 (e.g. sorbitan monostearate), and polymerized in the absence of a crosslinking agent using a radical polymerization initiator. EFFECT:A low concentration (=20wt%) aqueous solution of alkali metal acrylate can be used as it is, and an oil-soluble radical polymerization initiator can also be used.
