PURPOSE:To obtain high-purity ammonium sulfite and an acidic aqueous soln. of ammonium sulfite by decomposing ammonium sulfate in two stage to form ammonia and sulfur dioxide, which are then washed with molten sulfur and polyethylene glycol. CONSTITUTION:(NH4)2SO4 is thermally decomposed at =250 deg.C until the N/S atomic ratio becomes 1-1.5 to form an NH4HSO4-contg. composition and NH3. The composition is thermally decomposed at 250-440 deg.C in molten S to form a decomposed gas having a composition with an NH3/SO2 molar ratio of =1 and an H2O/SO2 molar taio of =0.67. This gas is then washed with molten S at 130- 250 deg.C and further washed with polyethylene glycol of 130-250 deg.C to remove sulfur, obtaining a purified decomposed gas. This gas is allowed to be absorbed in water or an aqueous ammonia soln. Thus, high-purity ammonium sulfite and an acidic aqueous soln. of ammonium sulfite are obtd.
