PURPOSE:To accomplish safe, quick and accurate analysis of total N and total C at a lower cost by passing a sample through oxidizing and reducing agents with removal of water after the passage through a decomposing catalyst, oxidizing and reducing catalysts and active gas removing agent heated at a high temperature in inert gas flow. CONSTITUTION:A sample is passed through a first reaction tube containing a decomposing catalyst, oxidizing and reducing catalysts and an active gas removing agent heated at 800-1,050 deg.C in an inert gas flow to obtain nitrogen compounds and carbon compounds from the decomposition of the sample with an aid of the decomposing catalyst, which are converted into a N2 gas and a CO2 gas with an aid of the oxidizing and reducing catalysts. A gas produced by decomposition of salts such as halogens and sulfur oxides are removed by the active gas removing agent. Then, water vaporized in the first reaction tube is condensed in a dewatering tube while an H2 gas and an O2 gas are removed by an oxidizing agent and a reducing agent in the second reaction tube heated at 400-700 deg.C in the inert gas flow. Then, the water produced is removed with a dehumidifying tube. N2 and CO2 gases from the dehumiditying tube is separated with a separation column and determined with a gas analyzer.
