PURPOSE:To provide graphite having excellent anisotropy by a method wherein electrostatic potential is applied between a conductive substrate installed in the atmosphere of thermally decomposed hydrocarbons and its counter electrode so that graphite generated by the thermal decomposition is deposited on the substrate surface in the presnece of weak electric field. CONSTITUTION:In a process for providing thermally decomposed graphite from hydrocarbon gas as raw material, an electrostatic potential is applied across a conductive substrate installed in an atmosphere of thermally decomposed hydrocarbons and its counter electrode. This allows generated carbon by the thermal decomposition to deposit on the substrate surface facing the electrode, in a 5-500V/cm weak electric field. The method provides highly orientated highly anisotropic, generated graphite by thermal decomposition of hydrocarbon at relatively low temperatures.
