To enable additional information to be transmitted at an unchanged clock rate in a transmission system, the information input at the transmitting end, which is present in the form of digital pulse packets of equal length limited by separators, is converted into a code with packets of unequal length in a code convertor (2). These are separated by clearly distinguishable separators. This makes it possible to transmit fewer pulses in the statistical mean for a given message length. Into the gaps produced in this manner, additional pulse packets from an auxiliary store (4) are inserted by means of a mixing stage (5). After the transmission, these are separated in a separating stage (9). The remaining pulse packets are returned to their original form in a code reconverter (11). Clock generators (7, 13) ensure that the basic clock is maintained at the transmitting end (A) and at the receiving end (B).
