A wire magazine for winding wire for use in a winding machine for winding of protracted materials or cores, preferably closed cores, comprises two ring-shaped half pieces 9, 10, which are thin-walled with essentially semicircular cross section to produce a largely closed supply space. The half pieces are separated by a wire filling slot 11 lying on the outside of the magazine and a bottom slot 12 facing the axis of rotation on the inside of the magazine, which is bounded by edge parts of the two half pieces 9, 10 so that its walls are not plane parallel with the central plane in the wire magazine, which is perpendicular to the axis of rotation. With this configuration of the wire magazine one achieves the best possible residual hole ratio for the winding of ring cores, while at the same time assuring an effective securing of the winding wire in the magazine after the cutting of the wire, and furthermore one achieves an improved security against slippage of the wire as it is being drawn out.
