Compounds of the formula: IMAGE in which R1 denotes an unsubstituted or substituted aryl group and n denotes 1 or 2, are prepared by partial hydrolysis of corresponding 1-cyanoindans and 1-cyano-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalenes. The compounds have analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory properties and can be used in the corresponding therapeutic indications.
