We claim: 1. A process of polymerizing ethylene which comprises contacting ethylene in an inert liquid diluent at a temperature of 25C to 250C in the presence of a catalyst which is the product of the reaction of (A) a nickel compound comprising an atom of nickel in complex with an olefinically unsaturated compound of from 2 to 20 carbon atoms, with (B) a benzoic acid derivative of the formula VII of the accompanying drawings, wherein the X"s are the same or different groups selected from the group consisting of SH, CN, N(R1)(R2), OR3, hydrogen and alkyl of up to 8 carbon atoms, R1,"R2 and R3 can be hydrogen or alkyl of up to 8 carbon atoms, with the proviso that at least one of the X groups is SH, CN, N(R1)R2) orOR3, said nickel compound A being reacted with said benzoic acid derivative B in a molar ratio of nickel compound to derivative of from 0.5 : 1 to I : 12.
