Process for the preparation of blasting agent/composition for mining, tunneling and other excavation work for construction of dams and like purpose comprising admixing ammonium nitrate and cellulose in a stoichiometric proportion so that when the said admixture is detonated by a primer charge in a blast hole it acts as an explosive and the free oxygen then liberated from the ammonium nitrate is balanced by the amount of the cellulose present in the admixture to achieve complete decomposition to liberate optimum explosive energy, characterized in that the ammonium nitrate used is crushed ammonium nitrate of 99 percentage purity and particle size finer than 40 mesh B.S. Sieve And the cellulose used is pulverized commercial cellulose in content of about 17 percentage by weight of ammonium nitrate, the cellulose used contains 68 percentage- cellulose, 32 percentage- cellulose and less than 3 percentage of ash.
