1435871 Pouring into moving moulds GENERAL MOTORS CORP 23 May 1974 [21 June 1973] 23112/74 Heading B3F [Also in Division F4] Mould-filling apparatus comprises a ladle 20 movable in a closed circuit to dwell while it obtains a molten metal charge and to pour the charge into a mould 14 while moving in unison with a conveyer carrying the mould. Cope and drag sand moulds 14 on carriages 18 and ladles 20 on independently-driven carriages 22 are locked together during pouring. The pouring spout 24 is controlled by a slide valve or stopper rod and metered quantities are controlled by a timer or a float. The carriages 18 have wheels 32 moved along. rails 30 by a chain 34. Each ladle 20 has a horizontal nozzle 64 and is tipped about the axis of the nozzle by a variable speed air motor on a carriage 22 having wheels 76 running on a track 70. The carriage is moved by a drive wheel 82 engaging a track 72 and driven by an air motor 80. The wheel 82 can be withdrawn from the track 72 by hydraulic means 83. Movements of the ladles are controlled by three concentric cams 86, 88, 90 and valves LV2, LV7, LV9, means on the furnace and valves (LV6, LV8) and means on the carriages and valves (LV11, LV4). Impact of a carriage 22 as it locks on to the conveyer line is cushioned by a piston (102) of a shock absorber. Each carriage has a piston 140 which is advanced by pneumatic means to engage a catch (142) at the furnace or a catch 150 on a drag flask 42 to lock the carriage during filling and pouring. A valve (LV1) is actuated when the piston is extended and valves (LV3, LV10) are operated by each ladle at the limits of its tipping movements. In the cycle of operations, the slow speed cam 86 is operative from A to C, Fig. 9 (not shown) and D to F, the fast cam from C to D and E to A and the pouring cam 90 from E to F. Manual over-rides may be provided.
