The system lifts a complete building, using reinforced concrete beams (15) cast on site and built into the outer walls (9) at least near ground level, these being joined together to form a rigid frame. Rigid load-bearing surfaces (14) are formed near ground level and outside or at least partly under the outer building walls, and on them lifting jacks (21) are mounted, the beams being secured to the jacks by suspension members (31). The building is then jacked up in its entirety, and a load-bearing filling (32) is constructed between the undersides of the beams and the foundations.
