The pref. self-propelled (3) and steerable (4) hopper dredger (1) comprises a hold (7) for receiving dredged material, such as a sand and water mixt., a suction head and a dredging pump with outlet line into the hold. It further has laterally extendable sweeper arms each hinged to a drag arm pivotable on a horizontal axis to a carrier fixed to the side of the deck. Each sweeper arm carries suction pumps for oil collected at the water surface with an outlet line to the hold. When retracted, drag arm with sweeper arm can be stowed inboard by swivelling about a horizontal axis. The longitudinal spaced derricks have their hoisting cables connected to the sweeper arms and are connected by a torsionally rigid structure, such as a tube, which supports the carrier. (FL).
