Evaporative dewatering of layer of dredged sludge - by covering with gas-permeable layer having capillary action e.g. lengths of fabric

The arrangement is intended for de-watering dredged sludge deposited within dammed or walled terrain area with or without water-draining sub-soil where the de-watering process takes place, at least in part, through eVapn. Evapn. is accelerated by increasing the evaporative surface area. This is effected by placing a gas-permeable layer with capillary action on the sludge layer. The evaporative surface area of this top layer is greater than the sludge surface area with which it is in capillary contact. This top layer pref. protects the sludge layer from direct solar radiation and may consist of one or more lengths of fabric. The fabric lengths may be placed vertically side by side or may be laid horizontally whilst having pile threads extending into the sludge and pile threads projecting upwards.
