Cutting tool for fibre optics - scores even line around glass fibre by rotating cutting head with internal blade, to ensure clean break

The cable (1) carrying the glass fibre core ends in a connector (26) which will mate with another connector to extend the transmission link. It is essential that the two joined fibres end in smooth faces at right angles to the axis of the fibre. The connector is inserted into the cutting tool after the knife (3) has been raised by pressing a spring-loaded knob (10). The connector (26) is held in position in the tool by means of three spring-loaded ball catches (25), set at 120 deg., which locate in a groove in the body of the connector. When the knob (10) is released, a spring (7) pulls the knife (3) onto the fibre. Rotating the plug in the tool scores a line round the circumference of the fibre, making a clean break possible.
