Electric reduction furnace is operated by a three-phase supply and with compensation for the reactive power. The electrical energy is supplied to the furnace via a three-phase transformer or three single-phase transformers via high-voltage cables, contact jaws and electrodes. The individual high-voltage lines are connected to compensating capacitors. The voltage is picked off above the contact jaws (5) and used to supply the compensating capacitors (11). The current from the contact jaws to the compensating circuit is used to reduced the inductive component of the current from the electrode (2) to the furnace transformer.
