Process for the preparation of trans-3,3-dimethyl-cyclopropane-1,2-dicarboxylic acid

Trans-3,3-dimethylcyclopropane-1,2-dicarboxylic acid is prepared from 2-acetyl-3,3-dimethylcyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid esters, in a first step by hydrolysis with aqueous-alcoholic alkali metal hydroxide solutions and, after removal of the alcohol by distillation, in a second step by reaction of the aqueous alkali metal salt solution with aqueous solutions of alkali metal hypochlorites.
