1317931 Pressure sensitive adhesive coating ROHM & HAAS CO 28 April 1970 [28 April 1969 16 March 1970] 20373/70 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Substrates such as rubber or synthetic rubber sheet, decorative laminates, polymethylmethacrylate, P.V.C., poly(ethylene glycol terephthalate), nylon, phenol formaldehyde resins, melamine-formaldehyde resins, rayon, silk, leather, linoleum, asphalt tile, ceramic tiles, mineral wool, asbestos, concrete, copper, zinc, chromium, nickel walls, ceilings and wood veneers, are provided with a pressure sensitive layer by coating them with a composition from which the liquid is removed after coating and which is heated after coating, the composition comprising (A) a dispersion or solution in a liquid medium of an addition polymer, said polymer being obtained from a monomer charge comprising (i) 0.3-35 p.b.w. per 100 p.b.w. of total monomer charge, of one or more ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids, (ii) one or more monoethylenically unsaturated compounds whose homopolymer has a Tg not exceeding 0‹C and optionally (iii) one or more compounds as in (ii) whose homopolymer has a Tg above 0‹C, the amounts of monomer (ii) and (iii) (if used) being such that the overall polymer has a Tg not exceeding 0‹C, and (B) a compound of a polyvalent metal of group IB, IIA, IIB, IIIA, IIIB, IVA, IVB, VA, VB, VIA, VIB, or VIII of the mendeleef Periodic Table, said compound being at least partially soluble in the liquid medium and the equivalency ratio of metal ions to carbonyl groups in the polymer being 0.01:1 to 2.0:1. A vast number of suitable metallic compounds (B) are listed, including oxides, simple ionic salts, complexes and chelates, e.g. acetates, benzoates, NH 3 and amine complexes, amine chelates, carbonates, glycollates salicylates &c. Metals from groups IIB and IVB are preferred. In the examples, aqueous compositions comprise (1) copoly (butylacrylate/methacrylic acid) emulsion and ZnO; (2) polymer emulsion of (1) and zinc glycinate; and (3) the emulsions of examples (1) and (2) but with zinc alaninate and zirconium alaninate. These compositions are coated on poly(ethylene glycol terephthalate) film. To protect the adhesive before use, the coated substrates are provided with a protective release backing.
