In forming an adhesive bond on a substrate with a heat hardenable resin adhesive (I), a flexible support (II) of synthetic, open-celled foam is impregnated with (I) and the impregnated (II) is brought together with the substrate such that (II) is pressed together to immobilise (I) in the cell structure. Materials under internal or external pressure e.g. underwater constructions can be repaired or sealed without the adhesive being pushed or shoved aside by the internal or external forces. Boats, ship hulls, pipes, oil platforms or pressure vessels can be repaired in situ. Fewer air pockets esp. close to the resin surface are formed.
