The invention relates to a method and a device for loading and unloading cargo pallets of one or a few uniform sizes into a container of predetermined size without subjecting the container floor to heavy loads or damaging its walls or ceiling. This is achieved with a loading boom (7) which is reciprocably movable in its longitudinal direction and the front end of which can be extended cantilevered into the container (2) without resting on the floor of the same. Pallets (1) can be moved to or removed from a loading station between the container (2) and the loading boom (7) in its retracted position. The front end of the loading boom (7) is provided with lifting means (9) for lifting or lowering the freight unit (1) from or to, respectively, the loading station or the floor (13) of the container (2). Thus the floor (13) is not subjected to any other load than the weight of the pallets (1). The lateral and vertical control is exact, thus avoiding damage to the walls and ceiling of the container. The loading and unloading sequences can be automated.
