The series processing of workpieces on a machine tool ensures a constant feed speed for each workpiece over the total transport distance and is esp. for milling cylinder blocks. Before machining the series of workpieces at least one preproduction part is processed at constant feed speed on the machine tool. For each such part the values of the patterns of cutting resistance are determined over the feed lengths. The average resistance value is stores and the production workpieces are then machined. the feed speed of the tool is controlled on the basis of a combination of parameters of which a first is a factor which decreases in a predetermined relationship to the increase in cutting resistance met by the tool. A second is proportional to the first factor and influences the feed speed opposite to the first parameter.
