CIRCUIT BREAKER WITH OPERATING MECHANISMHAVING OUTBOARD CAM AND RATCHETABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA circuit breaker is taught having an operatingmechanism with two parallel, spaced apart support members.A circular shaft having keyed ends is supported in theparallel support members such that the keyed ends extendoutboard of the two support members. On one keyed end isdisposed a correspondingly keyed cam. On the other keyedend is disposed a ratchet wheel which is spaced from thekeyed portion so that it may turn independent of the shaftin one direction. Also disposed on the same end as theratchet is a correspondingly keyed lever which rotatessynchronously with the cam. The lever may interlock withthe ratchet to be rotated thereby. Both the lever and camhave parallel connecting rods extending therefrom which areperpendicular to the shaft and generally parallel to thesupport plates. The rods are attached at one end thereof toa closing spring yoke. A closing spring is provided betweenthe yoke and a fixed member which is perpendicular to andsupported by the previously described support members.Rotation of the ratchet in the proper direction causesmovement of the connecting rods for compressing or chargingthe contact closing spring. Correspondingly, discharge ofthe spring moves the connecting rod to rotate the cam. Thecam is interlinked by way of a cam follower to a jack shaftwhich in turn is interconnected with separable main contactsfor opening and closing the contacts. A separate openingspring is interconnected with the jack shaft for the openingoperation.-1-
