AbstractThe present invention provides a novel herbicidally activeester, namely the cyanomethyl ester of 4-(p-trifluorome-thylphenoxy)-.alpha.-phenoxypropionic acid of the formulaIt is a further object of the invention to provide a her-bicidal composition which contains this novel ester as ac-tive component and also a post-emergence method of selec-tively controlling monocotyledonous weeds in crops of di-cotyledonous plants. The invention furthermore providesa process for the manufacture of the novel ester by methodswhcih are known per se by reaction of a corresponding tri-fluoromethyl-phenoxy-.alpha.-phenoxypropionic acid halide withhydroxyacetonitrile (cyanomethanol) or by reaction of4-(p-trifluoromethylphenoxy)-phenol with a .alpha.-halopropionicacid cyanomethyl ester.
