ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREIn a system for manufacturing chopped strandsof glass filaments wherein a multiplicity of glass fila-ments extruded through orifices in the bottom of at leasttwo spinning furnaces and applied with a sizing agentare collected to form at least two strands, which arebrought into contact with the circumferential surfaceof a feed roller through a predetermined angle so as tobe drawn and attenuated by frictional force exerted bythe circumferential surface of the feed roller while thestrands are cut into chopped strands of a predeterminedlength with a cutter roller in contact with the feedroller, an auxiliary feed roller is disposed adjacentto one end portion of and in axial alignment with themain feed roller and is driven independently thereof.An auxiliary cutter roller is adapted to contact underpressure the circumferential surface of the auxiliary feedroller to rotate therewith. In introduction of a strandonto the main feed roller, the auxiliary feed roller ismaintained substantially stationary or driven at a rela-tively low speed while the main feed roller is rotatedat a normal attenuation speed, and the strand is woundon and taken up by the auxiliary feed roller. The speedof the auxiliary feed roller is gradually increased toa normal attenuation speed, and thereafter the strand onthe auxiliary feed roller is moved onto the main feedroller.
