Abstract of the DisclosureAn arrangement of square fuel assemblies in the first andsubsequent cycles of a pressurized water nuclear reactor whereinshimmed feed assemblies and once-burned or equivalent assembliesoccupy the same checkerboard component of alternating diagonals inan inner region of the core, and the highest burned or equivalentassemblies occupy the other checkerboard component. The remainderof the core consists of an outer region containing another checker-board of feed assemblies wherein the feed assemblies occupy lessthan one-half the assembly locations on the core periphery.
