ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA method of preparing hydrotreating catalysts forcatalytic hydrodesulfurization of petroleum, having activatedalumina supports, comprising; preparing a partially dehydrated,rehydratable alumina by flash calcining Bayer process hydratedalumina; rehydrating said partially dehydrated alumina withwater which contains acid at pH below 7 at rehydration temper-ature, for the time needed for rehydration; solidifying therehydrated alumina; mulling the solidified rehydrated aluminawith sufficient water to make a mulled mixture suitable forparticle forming, forming particles of desired size and config-uration from the mulled mixture; drying the formed aluminaparticles and then calcining same by heating to calcining temper-ature; impregnating the calcined particles with liquid solutionsof soluble compounds which are thermally decomposable to oxidesof cobalt or nickel and to oxides of molybdenum or tungsten; andactivating the impregnated alumina particles by calcining heattreatment to form hydrotreating catalysts.
