PURPOSE:A chitin-based polyion complex, useful for a dialysis membrane etc., composed of a cationic or anionic chitin derivative or a chitosan derivative, and of an amphoteric deacetylated carboxymethylchitin or salt thereof. CONSTITUTION:A chitin-based polyion complex, soluble in an aqueous solvent, obtained by reacting (A) an amphoteric deacetylated carboxymethylchitin or salt thereof, an amphoteric high-molecular electrolyte, with (B) an aqueous solvent- soluble (a) cationic or (b) anionic chitin, or with (c) a chitosan derivative. Where (A) is a deacetylated product of deacetylation degree 0.1-1.0, preferably 0.3-1.0 per N-acetyl-D-glucosamine structural unit, from carboxymethylchitin or its salt of formula I or II (wherein M is H, alkalimetal, alkaline earth metal or NH4), having carboxymethylation degree of 0.1-1.0, preferably 0.3-1 per N-acetyl-D-glucosamine structural unit.
