In a coal liquefaction process using guanidinium compounds as auxiliary, the effectiveness of these is increased if they are allowed to act on the coal suspension for a period of several minutes at an elevated intermediate temperature of about 200 DEG C and the hydrogenation catalyst is then added only after further heating of the suspension to about 350 DEG C and higher, but still before reaching the reaction temperature at which the disintegrating hydrogenation of the coal takes place.
