A method for the continuous preparation of solfonates derived from long chain fatty esters.; According to the invention the starting material is subjected (5), to the action of a sulfonating agent (10), degassed (2), the sulfonation product thus obtained (6) and treated (3) with slightly aqueous methanol to obtain firstly an ester phase containing the unsulfonated starting material which is recycled (12) into the sulfonation step, and secondly a methanol phase which contains the desired sulfonic acid and which is subjected to evaporation (4) for separating firstly methanol and secondly said sulfonic acids.
