In the case of the method, the fuel is burned to form combustion products which are supplied, ionised by shock waves, to the MHD channel. In order to be able to use conventional fuels such as coal, oil, natural gas and carbon monoxide, etc., to keep the energy losses low and to achieve effective ionisation of the operating agent, the shock waves are not produced in the combustion chamber (10), by detonation of an explosive at point B, until the fuel has been burnt completely in said combustion chamber (10). In this case, the shock waves are passed a plurality of times through the combustion products by reflection on the walls (46, 48) of the combustion chamber. This produces multi-stage ionisation of the combustion products before said combustion products flow via the exhaust opening (34) to the MHD channel (12). IMAGE
