Cable winches alternately paying in and out, with one braked by the change in load on the other, are used for regulating the swivelling movements of a floating cutter-head suction dredger. - Media for measuring loading are provided on the winch with paying-in action, with levels conveyed to a brake control for the paying-out winch. Below a prescribed paying-in loading level, the latter's braking effect is increased as this loading diminishes, and reduced as it increases. This can involve a throttle valve in the hydraulic motor supply circuit. This enables cable tension to be maintained in all circumstances without introducing excessive tension forces.
