The apparatus for winding wire into a helical coil (5) includes a winding mandrel (1) which may increase gradually in diameter towards its free end. The wire is fed in the direction (4) from the fixed to the free end. Along the winding mandrel are evenly spaced ball bearing mounted rings (9,11), with their outer races rotating freely against the mandrel, guiding the coils. The rings are in two sets, each set mounted on a spindle (6,7) parallel to the mandrel, one each side, and anchored to the housing (22) around the driving end. Each outer ring has a sloping corner (13,14) for contact with the wire of the coil. Alternative design uses ball bearing rings with the spindles supported at an angle to the axis of the mandrel. (DS).
