Fluid pressure seal for rotating shaft - uses C-section member to increase pressure tightness with increasing fluid pressure

The shaft has a flange and rotates in the housing containing fluid at pressure tending to flow outwards in the direction of the arrow. The sealing rin body has a L-shaped cross section and supports a C section flexible sealing member. As the working pressure increases the C section tends to deform and exert an increasing outward pressure on the surface of the bore thus increasing the pressure tightness of the seal. A spring ring maintains the axial pressure on the sliding sealing strip which is pressed against the flange. To improve resistance to centrifugal force, an alternative design allows the C section to seal on its inner diameter.
