The principal is to allow more air to flow into the intake than is actually required by the propulsion unit and the surplus dumped before entry into the compressors. The intake air dump door (12) is fitted between the adjustable air intake ramps and the compressor. The dump door is regulated in conjunction with the intake ramp position by a variable ratio between the data obtained by wind tunnel and flight tests and the angle of incidence and the flight match number.
