The road making machine, for bituminous compound or other road surface laying, is designed for easy subsequent fitting of one or more auxiliary consolidating beams, while still permitting variation in the basic working width. The main consolidating beam, set across the line of operation, comprises a basic beam and extension pieces, and a laterally displaceable auxiliary beam is sited behind it. The auxiliary beam (10) is detachably fastened to the main beam (1) by connecting members (5). Its attachment may also be such as to permit height and/or slope adjustment.
