A plane of reference (1) is established on the rim of a piston head, where the piston is cast in light alloy and contains a cast iron ring insert (2) bonded metallurgically to the light alloy. A plane (1) is required for the subsequent machining of a piston ring groove in insert (2). Contactless, differential induction measurement is employed to establish the middle line of the insert at one point when the piston is stationary; and the piston is then rotated to determine any fluctuation in the middle line of the insert; the data are used to steer the turning tool. The apparatus may include two induction coils connected in a circuit which includes an amplifier and an analogue display device with a max. and min. memory store using adjustable time constants. A slide (5) carries the turning tool (6), and a monitor (9) is adjusted by hydraulic cylinder (10).
