Composite armour for vehicles, containers, safes etc. consists of the following layers. (A) plates of austenitic steel which cannot be cut with an oxyacetylene torch for the outer cladding; (B) insulating layer of asbestos, fibre mat or ceramic fibre board; (C) plate or panel of metal-ceramic material; (D) insulating layer of plastics, cork or ceramic fibres; (E) elastomer layer, e.g. of rubber; (F) small overlapping elements of A1 oxide (F1) or B carbide (F2) embedded in the elastomer layer; (G) adhesive layer, elastomer layer bonding (E) with (F); (H) plate of A1 for use with F1 or glass fibre-reinforced plastics with F2; and (I) grid structure around the chamber to be protected and consisting of profiled steel. The armour provides protection against thermal, mechanical, chemical and pyrotechnical stresses.
