The tunnelling shield has a front frame (1) and rear frame (1) supporting a set of horizontal cutters (4), advanced by telescopic cylinders (5). Additional cutters (13) are mounted on intermediate platforms (22), advanced by further cylinders (16). The portion of the frame (8) resting on the flow level cutters is formed as a trough to hold a liquid, which is delivered through a pipe (9) from the rear. Cut material (37) falling on the platforms (22) drops through holes (23) in the platforms, then into the trough. The resulting slurry is then extracted by a suction pipe (10) at the bottom.
