The wash basin has the water supply to the basin (2) controlled by an electro magnetic valve (7), itself controlled by an electronic circuit associated with a transceiver (11) detecting the presence of a user. The basin (2) is fitted into the top of a cupboard (1) with a front access door (3) which can only be opened by a special key or tool. The magnetic valve (7) is contained within the cupboard (1) and the housing (9) of the electronic control circuit, together with the trans receiver (11) are attached to the back of the door (3). The cupboard (1) may be made from sheet metal or tough plastics.
