The machine travels along rails over a slab, ingot or billet; and the pipes and electric cables supplying the machine are supported by a row of trolleys travelling along an overhead track. The pipes and cables are suspended as loops from the trolleys and one trolley is fixed on the machine and is joined to the next trolley by a bar which fractures if a specified stress is exceeded and switches off the power driving the machine along its rails. A safety loop of steel cable is pref. also fitted between fixed trolley and the next trolley. the slabs etc. can exceed 100 metres in length; but the invention precludes the fracture of pipe and cable loops carrying fuel gas, air, O2, cooling water, and electricity.
