A boa is manufactured by joining a series of transverse threads together along the line of their centres, and steaming to develop an irregular, cylindrical pile structure. The transverse threads may comprise wool, acrylic, viscose, cotton or metallised polyester film yarns. A series of loops joined transversally by at least one longitudinal thread may be formed by a weaving or knitting process, the loops being subsequently cut to form individual transverse threads. Several series of loops, preferably of different materials, may be superimposed, at least one series having shorter loops than the others, which remain uncut to form a denser, axial core to the boa.
