Electrolytic cell to produce sodium hypochlorite from a dil. soln. of common salt (NaCl) or sea water. It has a row of bi- or mono-polar cell elements arranged as horizontal chambers with vertical electrode plates. The electrolyte flows along the horizontal passages created by these plates. The electrodes intermesh such that the electrode faces are vertical while the flow passages are horizontal. The electrodes are rectangular plates made from Ti attached to a horizontal plate. Alternate horizontal plates are connected to the opposite poles of a d.c. source and the electrodes project up and down from the horizontal plates. To produce dil. hypochlorite solns. for disinfection, cooling water treatment and effluent treatment. Does not require circulation of the electrolyte liquor nor intermediate removal of the H2 generated.
