The location of a trackless vehicle is determined by passage over loops structured to generate coded identification signals. The vehicle carries sensing coils that have voltages induced by passage over a guide cable (1) inset into the ground surface. At an identification station, a number of loops (M1, M2, M3, M4) are formed in the cable. If H is the magnetic field in the general cable, then the field associated with the loops is 2H, 3H, 4H, 5H. Each station may be uniquely identified by providing a combination of the coils. In total a possible 16 coding combinations may be formed.
