Leached glass fibres with high silica content - where fibre properties impaired by leaching are restored by ultrasonic treatment

The fibres are subjected to an extn. treatment which increases their SiO2 content, but disturbs the molecular structure of the individual fibres and forms cavities due to the leaching process. After the extn. or leaching treatment, the fibres are exposed to ultrasonic energy to restore or repair their molecular structure. The ultrasonic treatment is pref. undertaken at a constant or varying frequency while the fibres are in a dry state or in a bath, esp. in a bath contg. substances such as SiO2 and/or metal cpds. used to fill the cavities and consolidate the fibres. Used on glass -fibres, -mats, -fleece, or -felt.
