Staple fibre yarns, contg. or consisting of cellulose fibres, are sized by applying a sizing mixt. of (1) 15-50 wt.% water-soluble alkaline earth salt of copolymers contg. by wt., (a) 90-30% acrylic- and/or methacrylic acid, (b) 10-70% acrylonitrile and/or methacrylonitrile and opt. (c) 0-30% acrylamide, methacrylamide and/or an acrylate and/or methacrylate ester, which has viscosity 50-1000 mPasec in 15% aq. soln. at 85 deg. C, and (2) 85-50 wt.% starch or starch deriv. Moisture-resistant size films are obtd. Sized warp yarns can be woven at high or low air-humidity. After weaving, the size films can be completely removed from warp yarns, more easily than when using a pure starch size or size mixts. of starch and Na- and/or ammonium salts of acrylic acid polymers. Enzymatic starch degradation is obviated. De-sizing can be carried out continuously.
