Domestic steam iron has a water-valve controlled by a manually-operated lever incorporated in the handle. The valve opens only if the thermostat is at a suitably high setting and if the handle is being gripped. Vertical rods connect the lever with a movable plate beneath the water tank in the body of the iron which opens the water valve via a rocker when the handle is gripped, and closes it when the grip is released. The spindle of the thermostat passes through a hole in the plate and carries a cam which locks the plate with the valve shut if the thermostat setting is insufficient for steam prodn.
