Alpha-olefin polymerisation catalyst prepn. - by reacting solid contg. magnesium and halogen in two steps with mixts. contg. side Gp=IV or Gp=V metal cpds.
Intermittent or continuous alpha-olefin polymerisation in gas-phase or in hydrocarbons as dispersants, under pressure 2-40 bar at 60-120 deg.C, opt. using H2 as mol.wt. regulator, is catalysed by a solid contg. side-Gp. IV and/or V element/s, Mg, halogen, oxygen and opt. a (further) main Gp. II and/or III element, and which is activated with main Gp. II and/or III organometallic cpds. Improvement consists in preparing a catalyst, to be further activated in alpha-olefin polymerisation, by (i) first reacting a prim. solid, contg. Mg and halogen, with tert. alcohols and with halogen-contg. side Gp.IV and/or V metal cpd(s). The solid modified in 1st step, is then (ii) reacted with halogen-contg. side Gp.IV and/or V metal cpd(s). and with at least one main Gp.II and/or III organometallic cpd. The alpha-olefin is esp. C2H4, opt. copolymerised with up to 10 mol % 3-6C olefins. The polymers can be blow-extruded, e.g. to hollow bodies or foils having smooth surfaces free from melt-break.
