In a process for polymerising C4 fractions free of butadiene and opt. isobutene with isoprene to lightly coloured, low melting resins using aluminium trichloride, alkyl aluminium dichlorides or protonated Friedel Craft catalysts of formula AlXnRm.HCl (where X is Cl, Br or I, R is 1-4C (iso)alkyl, n is 1-3 and m is 0-2) in 1-4C (iso)alkylbenzenes, the C4 fraction comprises, besides n-butane and isobutene, 0-55% isobutene, 10-50% 1-butene, 5-30% cis-2-butene and 5-30% trans-2-butene and isoprene is adoed in an amt. of 10-80% w.r.t. the C4 fraction. Polymerisation is carried out at -10 to 80 pref. 20-40 deg.C. The hydrocarbon resins are lightly coloured, odourless and have improved temp., oxidation and light stability. Elastomers are not preferentially formed. The resin can be used as a tackifier, as coatings for road making or carpets or as a paper size when modified with maleic anhydride.
