Antitumour use of 5-alkyl-pyrimidine nucleoside derivs. - as potentiators of 5-fluoro-uracil

New use of 5-alkyl-pyrimidine nucleoside derivs. of formula (I). (R is 2-10C alkyl; and is HN OH and Y is H or PO3H2, or X+Y is a cyclic phosphate ester gp.) is used in combating malignant diseases and in immunosuppressant therapy. (I) are potentiators of the known cytostatic activity of 5-fluorouracil. Unlike thymine (also used as a potentiator of 5-fluorouracil), (I) are excreted unchanged and do not give rise to toxic side effects. They may be administered parenterally or orally, before, after or simultaneously with (advantageously in admixture with) 5-fluorouracil.
