Heat for use in heating and domestic water is recovered from ground water borehole by means of a heat pump. The evaporator of the pump is sunk into the borehole below the water table. The evaporator consists of a long vertical cylinder made from Cu. Inside, the cylinder has a number of conducting baffles e.g. of Al soldered onto the cylinder. The cylinder has a pipe down the centre which serves as an oil return pipe and has a non-return valve on the end. This allows accumulated oil to be returned to the compressor. The cylinder has a plastic heat exchanger coil surrounding it on the outside. For recovery and utilisation of heat in ground water gives capacity for energy storage, which can be automatically controlled, can be used to store solar energy, can assist in recovery of heat from motor exhausts driving heat pump, can recover heat from waste water, the evaporator is not subject to much corrosion, and the system allows simple removal of oil.
